Camarena
ITS HISTORY

Inhabited by Carpetana and Romans. Reconquered by Alfonso VI to Muslims, Christians were stocked with Mozarabs.
Alfonso VIII granted the town the title of very loyal and faithful villa for his attitude in the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa. The Catholic Monarchs council would give its "Letter of Puebla Fuero Real" in 1498.
Philip V gave the title of faithful, for having been loyal during the War of Spanish Succession.
The tradition mind that the Virgin of Charity, the patron of the population, it appeared a pastor to the thirteenth century. But first and foremost Camarena is famous for its wines,
becoming the epicenter of the wine Province, and probably the town of Designation of Origin Méntrida more production from the area. The first historical references appear on wine in 1529. From this date there is a letter or imposition of a tax on a "majuelo" of the acquirer states "Labrada said majuelo and improvements in well-populated and well-wrought strain and I give him every year in the Proceedings accustomed ..." . In 1620, Camarena's neighbors fall in litigation with the City of Toledo for the rights to sell wines in the area.
Today Camarena has become a solid producer of wines of superb quality.
WHAT TO SEE
Its history is reflected in the rich historical and artistic legacy that is kept in the city centre. Among its most representative buildings, the parish church of St. John the Baptist in quarrying and brick. Inside you find the Main Altarpiece, built in the sixteenth century by John of Burgundy (paintings) and copine Holland (sculptures). It is one of the first samples of Renaissance altarpiece in land Toledano, but left in the same remnants of a late Gothic. The scenes represented combine moments of the life of St. John the Baptist with others of the Passion of Jesus Christ.
The coach of the patron saint of Camarena, the Virgin of Charity, is a splendid work carpentry finished with gold leaf, which is considered one of the most ostentatious of Europe. From style Louis XV and possibly Portuguese author, dating from the early eighteenth century. It represents essentially secular themes of the Greco-Roman mythology and is done with ornamental elements and movements of the Baroque. Today the coach, who has been recently restored, presents a magnificent aspect to be proud of all camareneros arousing the admiration of all the covered during Carnival processions and patron, the Virgin of Charity on it.
Do not forget to visit the shrine of the Blood of Christ, the building that his situation, coupled with the municipal cemetery, gives a very beloved. An example of religious architecture of the eighteenth century, its exterior is constructed with elements from the purest Mudejar Toledo while its interior is already clearly Baroque. Its atrium, probably made at a later stage, is the most remarkable architectural element.
