Escalona
ITS HISTORY

The local history lies the origins of this town 500 years before Christ, another version quotes Nebuchadnezzar troops and a third flow points to Syrians as its founders. Reconquered in 1083, Ferdinand III donated to the infant Don Manuel, when he starts the stage of manors.
Escalona becomes Lordship with the lineage of "Manuel" in the middle of S. XIII by the infant Don Juan Manuel.
The character of nobility is purchased with Don Alvaro de Luna, during the reign of John II. Henry IV in 1470 granted the lordship of Don Juan Pacheco, Marques de Villena, dynasty that will endure until the dissolution of manors.
His whole city retains the medieval streets, and there were remnants of the original wall, the Puerta de San Miguel and some churches. His castle of Arab origin and trace Mudejar was rebuilt in times of Alfonso VI, inhabited by Don Alvarado of Moon and at the time of maximum splendor was one of the largest fortifications on the Peninsula. Over the centuries suffered several reforms, which reflect various styles. Structurally is shaped like an irregular polygon and is divided into two parts: the main square and the palace in the south. It is now privately owned and is partly restored. Since 1922 is a National Monument.
The town retains its original layout, designed during the Middle Ages. In its Plaza Mayor is celebrated since the thirteenth century the weekly market.
Economically, Escalona lives of the service sector, construction and the numerous housing developments that have the town, due to step River Alberche. In its banks focuses farming, stressing the vine crops. The strains are planted on rocky terrain, along the Ribera del Alberche and the foothills of the Sierra de Gredos. Their crops are of high quality although its production per hectare is low.
WHAT TO SEE
Among the highlights monuments of the Monastery of the incarnation of the sixteenth century, which belongs to the transition from Gothic to Renaissance. The parish church of San Miguel or the building that houses the council are also peculiar places to visit.

WHAT TO EAT
The partridge, hare with rice, or the rabbit bush irrigated with wine, stews are protagonists in cookers Escalona during the hunting season. The rest of the year, lamb, especially the shoulder roast, potatoes or beans with ribs with ear are part of traditional cuisine in this town.
