Fuensalida Palace

Located at Plaza del Conde, next to the church of Santo Tome, took virtually the entire single flank built.

Is currently the headquarters of the Presidency of the Castilla-La Mancha, but even before here ruled on behalf of her absent husband always beautiful Empress Elizabeth of Portugal, as the old Alcazar was not suitable residence. For their rooms had run the future Philip II and his two sisters, future queen of Portugal over and Empress another.facade

It was lifted by the first lord of Fuensalida already in mid-fifteenth century, Pedro Lopez de Ayala. The building is a typical example of Mudejar palaces, a base made of brick, masonry, wood and plaster, articulated on two floors around a rectangular courtyard, whose pillars are octagonal shaft limed and crowned with decorative capitals of the heraldic Condes. The cover lintel, done in marble, is the element that stands out in its austere facade, with shields of the owners, being the prototype of civil architecture of the Gothic-Mudejar Toledo.

In the hallway hangs a velvet coat of the empress, who brought the original in 1525. In this palace died of childbirth Isabel the May 1, 1539 and his son, then aged 11, had to preside over the departure of the funeral procession to Granada, as his father, broken pain, is locked in the convent of the Sisler for weeks. The Duke of Gandia dealt with so sad move of his beloved queen few years after renouncing the worldly life. He became the third superior of the Jesuits and today we know as San Francisco de Borja.
