Tránsito Synagogue. Sephardi Museum

outside

inside The building itself is a synthesis of three cultures and exponent of the traditional architecture and assimilation of local Jewish communities. The structure is simple and meets the basic needs of their spiritual life, with the sacred niche in the wall, hekal, and the gallery of women. The Great Hall of Prayers is a Gothic palace hall, decorated with delicious plasterwork characteristic of Islamic art Cordoba, whose header presents a triple polilobulado Almohad arc, to save the sacred scrolls. It is covered by an impressive coffered of "torque and knuckle." The decor combines elements plant complex with geometric, Hebrew inscriptions and repeated shield the Spanish king. Both the plasterwork as the roof partially preserved the original medieval polychromy. The light enters the room screened by blinds plaster. Its foundation is due to Samuel Levi and the special privilege of King Pedro I of Castile, grateful for the support given by Jews Toledano in the fratricidal struggles with Trastámara, in mid-fourteenth century. Then the royal treasurer had not yet fallen into disgrace that led him to death in prison, or suspected that the king would die assassinated by his brother ... The rooms adjacent courtyard house and recovered today demonstrate the continued Jewish presence in Spain since the dawn of history, as well as elements of the Sephardic culture, namely the Spanish Jews scattered throughout the world, after his expulsion in 1492.
